At the opening day of Utrecht Science Week – Friday September 29 – Utrecht University of Applied Sciences will put the future of our water up for discussion. How do we turn the tide? Besides a keynote by meteorologist Reinier van den Berg, among others, the programme of this afternoon symposium offers six inspiration sessions<\/strong><\/p>\n

The inspiration sessions elaborate on various themes around climate change and its impact on water, namely:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Water security and the smart embedding of water in society are key prerequisites for achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs). How do we arrive at a quantitative assessment of water security? Jan Hofman (Bath University) explains.<\/li>\n
  2. The impact of climate change on the risk of waterborne infectious diseases: how can we mitigate the risks of climate adaptation measures in the built environment – think wadis and water squares? Ciska Schets (RIVM) updates you.<\/li>\n
  3. Drinking water supply: how can the drinking water sector prepare for uncertain and extreme climate change? Peter van Thienen (KWR) gives the answer.<\/li>\n
  4. Drinking water supply: how can we reuse treated wastewater in the water cycle so that good and safe drinking water remains a matter of course in the future? A look behind the scenes at Waternet, by Onno Kramer, Hadi Zamanian and Sophie Brevoord.<\/li>\n
  5. Drinking water supply: looking for effective ways to save water. Data analysis and deployment of behaviour change techniques. Susan van Dijk explains the approach of drinking water company Vitens.<\/li>\n
  6. Desiccation and precipitation: how we as spoilt water consumers can start dealing with ‘other’ water. That the production and consumption of rainbeer are part of this, explains Wietse Visser (Waterschap Vallei en Veluwe \/ Rainbeer).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
